The gas gauge light stays on even after filling the gas tank

Asked by Manu123 Aug 29, 2009 at 11:13 AM about the 2000 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML 320 4MATIC

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have 2000 ML 320. When gas is low the gas gauge light comes on, but after filling the tank the light stays on and the gauge needle stays at bottom. After some driving , when 1/4 of tank of gas is used, the gauge light disappears and the gauge moves to 3/4 full position. This happens every time gas is empty and when the tank is filled. Does n ay one has experineced this issue? any comments?

The same thing happened on my 1999 ML 320. That is, it would happen even after refilling without first reaching a volume low enough to turn on the light. After several restarts, the gauge would act normally until the next refill. After several months the gauge failed to work at all and I have been forced to using the trip odometer as an indicator of when to refill. Repair estimate are in the range of $1K so it has yet to be done. This is the second German car in a row in which the fuel gauge has failed. Frustrating!

The electronic fuel pump controls the fuel gage. To replace a fuel pump by a non MD dealer is about $625.
