1999 Mercedes SL500

Asked by PaulAppleton Oct 10, 2018 at 04:17 PM about the 1999 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL 500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

1999 Mercedses SL500.  Soft top started operating slower and slower and
then stopped. Found convertible top motor fluid reservoir empty. Bought a
used motor, not knowing if that was the problem. Perhaps I have a leak in a
line but not the resevoir itself. Also windows stopped working at same time. I
know they are electric but are they somehow tied in? I doubt this is a
coincidence. When replacing the motor, I could not get motor to turn. Same
on original and I even had a 3rd pump because the wrong one was sent
when I first ordered. Trying to figure out why I cant get the motor to turn or
even make noise. I tested it without putting in new expensive fluid. I doubt
the reservoir has to be filled just to know if you have power to the motor. I
can't get beyond this point. I bought the car used and have no manual or
schematic. I came on line to find a schematic and ran across this site. Please
help.

I have not tinkered with this system on my 2001 SL500 so I can't help you with your question. I am just writing so that you won't be discouraged by the previous comment from working on your car in the future. There is nothing magical about the construction of a Mercedes-Benz. I truly believe that the dedicated car owner/home mechanic has one big advantage over the Black Forest trained trolls who command the huge hourly rates at your local dealership. You give a damn whether your car is repaired correctly or not. The trolls go home at 5:00 whether your car was repaired properly or not. The Seattle area has three factory authorized dealer repair facilities. I have brought my vehicles to two of those dealers, one dealer several times, and, each time, have been far from satisfied with the results. Keep on doing what repairs on your Mercedes that you feel able to accomplish. The right mechanic will then be on the job. Sorry that I could not help you with your problem.
