Have a 500 SL (2000 yr). Radio works but volume
knob is stripped and is set fairly low. Is there a
way to raise volume to acceptable level... or
exchange vol control knob..? Anyone know how
to do this??

I have had great success using two-part epoxy resin/hardener to fix similar problems on older cars. You can purchase this stuff at any hardware store or even drugstores and supermarkets. Place some masking tape over the face of the radio where the shaft protrudes. Mix the epoxy as directed on the package, Use a toothpick to dab some of the mixed resin into the bore in the knob until the hole is about 25% full. Then sloooowly push the knob onto the shaft of the radio. You want to do this slowly because if you place too much epoxy into the hole it will spill out when the knob is fully seated on the shaft and will make a mess on your radio. If epoxy does start to ooze out, remove the knob and use a rag to clean off the excess. Then put the knob back onto the shaft. Let your work dry for the time period suggested on the epoxy package and then have a ball adjusting the radio volume to your ears desire. This is a "permanent" fix, in that the knob may not easily come off if you do need to remove it in the future.
