pre 96 SLs had a different electrical system which was corrected in late 95, If it is well maintained over the years and low mileage, they are built like tanks. Watch out for corrosion in the radiator, it will surely lead to transmission repairs which could be costly, slight oil leak from the engine may not be a major issue, although the repair maybe costly, 6-8 hours plus gaskets, oil etc... find a 6 cyl if you can, I think it is a batter choice. Good luck.
Look for a 2004 and up for lowest maintance 205-06. 2003 was first year that body style I can look for one too for you if you like , tony Sanfilippo 414-290-1470 or 414-581-1191 celebrating 40 yrs with Mercedes Benz
If you can get a few more dollars and buy 2007 SL550 instead, I think you will be a lot happier. There were may significant changes that year as well as the larger engine. Also - and a big deal - you can get extended warranty if you want on a 2007. As a general rule, you are very limited on what type, if any, warranty you can get on a car over 7 years old.
