A question about a fuel pump main relay.

I own a 1989 Honda Civic Hatchback (I believe DX) and I was wondering what
might cause a fuel pump relay (also called a main relay) to go bad. Could it be
a fuel filter that's clogged? A short in the car? Any information would be
appreciated.

With a car that old, it probably just died of old age (either the relay or the pump). The filter, if it hasn't been changed a few times over its 30+ year life could cause low or no fuel flow but not cause the death of the pump. Do you hear the pump activate when you turn the key and start the car?
