Only a thousand to spend? Ok- both the cars you mention do not sound good- you can save gas as long as they run- but they both sound like they are on their last legs- then you are out the grand plus whatever it costs (lots) to repair them- it is a zen quest to ride for cheap on a thousand dollars- but you are talking to a guru- you must find just the right thousand dollar car- search far and wide- it will be a low mileage old lady car completely intact-- it will be something like a mid nineties Toyota Corolla-
I second that emotion. Find a senior citizen who owns the car since new (1 owner only) preferably garaged do not buy cars from kids lowered or tinkered with cars stay away from young owners they already trashed it for you!!!!!!!! No rebuilds spare engine crap. Look for state sales they are usually garaged and unused for a few years before the owner died and family will be glad to unload it fast to sell the property. However, a grand is like looking for a Cessna in good sound FAA flying condition for only $5G's sort of impossible. Good Luck!!!
