were can I find the engine ground wire on my 1989 toyota corolla gts?

When driving my battery gauge jumps all the way to the right and i can smell my battery getting hot, I
think I might have a bad ground wire....

The battery ground wire should be under the hood relatively close to the battery itself just trace the wires and u will find it

I don't know where the regulator is on that particular car, external or built-in with alternator, but in either case check it. The regulator I mean...and demontoad is correct, I am not disputing his answer but from what you describe it may not be a simple as a ground wire. Hopefully it is though.
