why does my 89 toyota idles high when i turn on my head lights?

check aternator to make shure its out put is correct,engine may be compensating for lack of power to headlamps

How high is "High"? If you mean it increases by 2-300 rpm, that's just the alternator needing that much more speed to compensate for the draw, as told to by the "brain"..if you mean increases by 2000, then I am stumped myself.
