The dual overhead cam has two camshafts over top of the valve train instead of one. You may want to take your vehicle to a dealer to have them decode your VIN number. A DOHC or SOHC (single overhead cam) engine is typically marked as such somewhere on the engine itself. There are six engines listed for the First Generation Celica here: http://www.toyoland.com/cars/celica.html Three of them are 1.6L, one is an overhead valve, one SOHC, and one DOHC.
i have some parts for those early celica's if your interested
Is the block an 18r? If it is then you have an 18RG. I have the heads and carbs form one of these. The distributor numbers will give it away also. It is a TRG engine.
the engines are 2tc, 2tg, 18rc, 18rg, 20r the 2tg is the 1.6 dohc motor the 18rg is the 2.0 dohc motor
