Question type: Maintenance & Repair
My 1977 toyota Celica has AC, but it needs to be
recharged. There are two valves on the
compressor, but I don't know which one is high and
low. Also what refrigerant does it use and how
much? I can't find any information on this subject.

A 1977 used R22 refrigerant. They no longer provide R22 for automotive use and will actually be illegal in the year 2020. To get your system charged, you will need to buy a 134a conversion kit. This will come with fittings to convert the high and low ports to a different style connection for charging. Down side.. 134a only has 60% of the cooling properties of R22 and the system will most likely not produce as cold of air as before. It just wasn't designed for it. I would have it professionally serviced and converted if you want the best performance. You will have better results if the system is evacuated of all R22 first. Not a good idea to mix refrigerants if there is some still in the system.
Correction.. R12. Not R22. Thanks Tom.
