1987 Touota Celica courtesy light door jam controller

Asked by Guru29QJM Feb 20, 2020 at 04:37 PM about the 1987 Toyota Celica GT Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The black plastic actuator above the door latch on the door jam has broken in half and is unrepairable.
This is a spring loaded mechanical device (with an arrow pointing up) that tells the car's door jam device that the door is open.
When the #2 fuse in the driver's kick panel is installed, all the courtesy lights work, but they stay on constantly, except the dome light which is independently switchable.
Obviously the timer mechanism in the passenger door is keeping them on "thinking" that the door is open.
The black actuator is no longer available from Toyota, so how can I disable the passenger door timer, and get my courtesy lights operational ?

Yes, I agree, however the rear inner panel would need removal to access the jam switch. Any other way of disabling it ? Don

Ed, the switch/delay timer is in the door jam above the striker plate, not the door. Removing the air vent gives access to it somewhat, and it feels rather large. The black actuator moves a whiteish lever on the device which turns on the courtesy lamps, and then the go off when the timer counts to zero. I think so anyway. Here's a photo of the driver's door with what's remaining of it's actuator, as the pointed tip is broken, but it still seems to function for on, but the passenger door always appears to be open, as far as the courtesy circuit is concerned. I'm thinking of rigging something physical to move and hold the passenger side switch to the closed position, like a block of wood inserted up through the vent hole. I'm trying to not to take out the rear passenger side panel to get to it, but I may have to. Don
