Transmission

Asked by MikeMike Aug 02, 2009 at 10:14 PM about the 1987 Toyota Celica GT-S Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi -
I have a 5 speed '87 Celica GT Convertible. It pops out of 3rd into neutral all the time. I also have a lot of trouble getting it out of 5th. Can this be fixed? Or do I need a whole new transmission? I am the original owner. It has the original transmission and 150,000+ miles. I always changed the oil and it runs great. I'm trying to figure out if my car's worth keeping. The body has no rust. Thanks for any help you can give me. Mike

you can do it or get the transmission rebuilt. its all internal stuff

Sounds like you could have a sticky linkage or possibly damaged motor mounts. Check the basic things first before condemning the transaxle. Also check the fluid level and condition as well.

I realize the above posts are a bit old, but was this ever resolved, and how? My 84 Celica GTS is acting up the same way, 5th gear keeps popping out. What was the final resolution?

Mine ground away in 5th until it went zing and pretended 5th was neutral... had to drive in 4th. Sounds like an aircraft turbine. .
