the light goes on when it is testing the system- if it stays on, you have a problem with your anti-lock brakes and they won't function corredtly- you will have to pump them like regular brakes until you get the problem fixed- some common problems are 1. wheel speed sensors 2. problems in the ABS module itself- number one is cheaper to fix than number 2- a local dealer or qualified technician could hook up to your car's computer and get the codes that have been stored to diagnose it for you and then you can decide if you want to fix it.
