I think you should first check the fan relay,if you can wire the fan and it run,s.Or splice the wire at the fan,run ground to battery ground, and another to the fuse panel,on the hot side of any fuse, that way when you switch key on fans come,s on.
Will cut off with key all so. No switch to deal with, and you know fan is on.
Im cocompletely new to my car lol I have no idea What a fan relay is
Do you know where the fuse box is located on a Volkswagen 1998 gti is
It controls, when the fan cuts on,it is located in the fuse panel,or near the fan it self,it will be a little box, look it up on google it will show you.
normaly the reason for the cooling fan not kicking on is its either stoped working or a temp sensor is gone. I ussaly go for the first option since it only turns on when your driving and is commonly off. Just buy a new fan and slip it in there. Should work after that i had the same issue with my audi it has the same engine. the cooling fan would not turn on and it was because the fan had succumbed to the elements and rusted up to much in its motor.
