Lmy mk5 golf gti had engine managment light on and could smell petrol now the light has gone off but can still smell fuel any ideas please

The code for the CEL may still be in the ECU, go to an Autozone and have them connect an ODB2 sensor to pull the code, this will get you right to the center of the problem. Could be an exhaust leak throwing off the oxygen sensors, giving off an exhaust/gas smell. Could be worse, could be a fuel leak at the tank/line/engine, check for any leaks. Best thing you can do is try to pull the code.
