Oil light/ engine rev

Asked by Matt1956385 May 14, 2009 at 08:39 PM about the 1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The oil light keeps coming on but there is plenty of oil in there. Also, when the car is not in gear, the engine revs itself, dropping down to bellow 1000rpm's, then shooting up to around 3000rpm's

my car does the same thing with the revs. you may need a distributor cap. cause if any moisture or anythings gets around it the car starts to do that. but the oil light. i would prob say its just a sensor.

Take it to a shop. Most cars the oil light doesn't go on with low oil. It's low oil pressure that causes it to go on. If it's going on while you have oil, there may or maynot be a problem with the oiling system.

agree. oil pressure could be the problem. better safe than sorry

oil pressure switch has most likely gone bad. it is a fairly simple procedure but if i remember you have to be fairly flexible to get to it
