96 VW Jetta that's not starting

Asked by Meghan May 08, 2012 at 08:55 PM about the 1996 Volkswagen Jetta 4 Dr GL Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 96 Jetta will not start. I got the engine wet, it ran rough then stalled and died. I replaced the coil, cap and rotor
and I still have no spark. Any ideas?

Could water have gotten in through the air intake? If so the spark plugs or even the wires could be bad.

Hard to tell a lot of things could have gone bad. Worse case scenario if water got into cylinder head, u can try taking the spark plugs out and blow it out, and change oil afterwards. But could be some bad electrics too, ECU or some cablez could have gone wet. Did something similar some 10 years back, I ended up changing the whole engine as it carried on running rough afterwards... In future never ever a good idea to wash ur engine ESPECIALLY on them older cars. sorry
