warmed up my car in cold weather, but it stalled & won't start up again

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

hi all, I have a '98 VW Jetta TDI. I've had no problem with it. Engine light is on, garage says it's a glow light error. I live in Vancouver & it's just recently gotten a bit cold ( -5) so my hubby started my car up for me to warm it up & defrost the windshield before putting the kids in it to head out for the morning. But, when I got in & went to take the e-brake off, it stalled & now it won't start. The Battery is dead! Hubby says the "trunk open" light was on, but that's not possible, it was shut. Any ideas what it could be?

check your alternator if the battery died while it was running you most likely are having voltage issues. Your dash should have a volt dumby light. the next time you start it watch that. if it drops any where past 13.4 volts (middle betwen 12-14 volts) the alternator is not charging correctly. regular voltage levels are 14.2 volts and 13.5 at idle. and not any where bellow 13 Volts on a load
