Check engine light turns on

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So my husband was about to park in the
driveway and the check engine light turned
on and the car turned off and the check
engine light turned on. After a few attempts
the car started and the light turned off.
A little background I just bought a 99 Betts
that has been sitting for about 1 year.

Other than that the car drives like a charm it just has some problems when it needs to be turned on. It takes as I said a couple of times of him trying to turn it on.
With a vehicle that has been sitting for a long time...so much can be affected negatively. I recommend a fuel system flush and filter change. Also, at the age of this vehicle, the 02 sensor will be suspect. Be sure to use high-quality fuel as well...Chevron is my choice for it's excellent detergents and quality. The diagnostic capability of the car is robust. If the light returns, go to your nearest autoparts store and get them to scan the car for fault codes...from there, you can plan additional maintenance and service.
Ross tech software is required to properly diagnose a vw or audi.
Simple OBD-II scan tools are useful to get one started in the troubleshooting process. Let's not discourage our fledgling VW owners from maintaining their cars by suggesting they spend hundreds of dollars on diagnostic equipment and software.
you can get a simple usb plugin tool for 15-30$ on amizon. Then all you need is any pc you can plug a usb device in and install the software onto. just head to amazon and find the 409 usb dongle VCDS for audi and vw's Its the one compatable with your car.
