no aircondition.  when i connect a can to it the meter reads 140 on the can

Sounds high if that is on the low side without the system on. My thoughts are that there is a restriction in the system such as a plugged up condenser or expansion valve issue. I would suggest not trying to add anymore Freon until you get a gauge for the high and low sides and have the system operating if possible. Good Luck!
