My jetta did the same thing for a while, whenever its humid out if ur distrubutor is old moisture can get underneath the cap and not alow it to spark (so ive been told). This usually happened to me when i was at a red light, if you shift into neutral and give it some gas it usually will keep it from dying but if your is not starting up you may wanna clean underneath the distributor cap or get a mechanic to do it

just put new spark plugs in it and air filter. This car doesnt have a distributor it has coil packs. the plugs should cure it but a way to check it take a spray bottle and spay the coils down. one or more might need replacing.

What is especially common are leaking cam cover gaskets, some will leak severely enough to fill up the holes that the spark plugs reside in,and can create all sorts of havoc, worn plugs are another that will create issues by overloading the coils.VW,s are very sensitive in the secondary ignition as to components and quality of the same,go with an O.E. Replacement and you will eliminate a lot of problems of cheesy aftermarket replacement parts,Bosch or Beru are the two main suppliers and NGK for the plugs or go OE on then plugs,a little pricy but then so is a breakdown when you need to be someplace important.

I am having the same issues with the same car. I have read a lot. I have a few ideas. It could be the coolant sensor, the fuel pressure regulator, the warm/cold start sensor, The fuel pump relay, or the fuel pump.
