There should be a part number stamping somewhere on the transmission that will give an excellent idea where to start. Also, it was a very popular model...that should mean a large supply of used transmissions in the salvage yards. The folks at those facilities should be able to find one that matches your vehicle.

switching from a standard to a auto is going to be pricy Your engine already had alot of parts replaced to change it to a manuel and you will need alot of parts and labour to change it back. Your best to replace it with a standard trany especialy since you will have a few extra holes in your floor if you remove the stanard trany since the clutch goes with it.

After having done a few MK1 and MK2 engine swaps, I can safely say there won't be be a difference in the engine block from manual to automatic model vehicles...that would increase manufacturing costs and VW doesn't like inefficient manufacturing. The difference would be in the flywheel (manual) or flex-plate (automatic) that mounts to the end of the crankshaft. If the vehicle has been properly converted to manual transmission, you should be safe to find another with the same partnumber (as stamped on the side of the transmission) and replacement should be straight forward. BTW, while you're in there...you'll want to replace the clutch, pressure plate, and through- out bearing to further increase reliability.
