Being a diesel, the first thing I would check/replace is the fuel filter. Also, being an older vehicle it may have high mileage. The timing belt may have jumped a cog or two throwing the valve train out of timing, causing power loss. It should be inspected/replaced every 100,000 miles. Scan for fault codes too.
