Beetle doesn’t turn over occasionally

Hi,
I have a manual 2000 VW New beetle.
Occasionally my car will not turn over, it is
similar to having a dead battery but my
lights etc still work. I will turn the engine  
off, put the car in neutral and roll forward
or backwards if I’m on a hill. I will come to
a complete stop, then turn the key and the
engine will run. If I’m not on a hill and can’t
roll, I’ll come back 45 min later and it will
turn on. I don’t know much about cars, so
all I can guess is I need a new starter. Any
ideas what it could be? Thanks!

Sounds like the starter but check your wiring and connections to your starter before buying one

Mine did same thing and I found out was the fuel pump relay / got a new used on at pull apart for 10 bucks / says # 409 on it . stopped problem for 1 year, now having what we belive is a crank sensor issue ,
