Why do the bulbs on my 2001 vw beetle keep blowing when i replace them?

I have a 2001 vw Beetle and every time i replace the bulb in the headlamp the other side
blows the bulb.

I always changer both sides at the same time and keep the old good one as a spare .Then when one goes out put in the used bulb . I was told this would help with bulb life
