05 NB convertible with manual top beeping

Asked by Perryfarley Apr 02, 2015 at 11:18 PM about the 2005 Volkswagen Beetle GL 2.0L Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Loud beeping when the top is down and you put it in gear.  After stopping at a light, when
you hit the gas, it beeps again for about 5 seconds. The VW car indicator also constantly
flashes orange whenever the car is running.  Any ideas?  Again, this is a manual
convertible, so no power switches or pumps to mess up

This top should have a power control even though you're able to control it manually without damage. The beeping would indicate a fault code in the top mechanism. I'd find an independent shop that uses Rosstech or Vagcom and have the top system scanned for fault codes. You probably have a malfunctioning microswitch(there are several) or latch.

It is a 100% manual top, no power control whatsoever. Regardless, I do not know anyone that has the scan tools mentioned, and I'm trying to avoid paying anyone to fix, as I'm broke. If someone can tell me where the micros switches are and how to get to them, I can check them out

I am was having the same problem on a 2006 NB manual top. The top must be pushed down in back on both sides until it "clicks" - you will see an orange tab on each side. the latch is some where in that vicinity - if I put my weight on the folded bar - I can get it to lock in place. This will cure the beeping etc. On the passenger side it is much more difficult to push down which I believe is the source of teh problem again push down as had as you can and it will lock. The beeper is a sensor informing you that the top is not locket down. Having the top secured in place will also give you a little but more function in your rear view mirror. Good luck !
