1999 Passat - hood does not release (pop up) when I pull the lever from inside

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
1999 Passat - hood does not release (pop up) when I pull the lever from inside the car. If I pull the lever & someone pulls up the hood it releases - tells me the cable is not broken. I tried looking for some kind of pressure mechanism (spring) that pop the hood but could not find anything. Is it the hood support strut that supplies the initial spring. This all started when I lightly rear ended another vehicle. No visible damage, but something got knocked out.
Thanks in advance for your help.........bill

i had the same issue with my 90 ... i tightened a bolt in the release mechanism and it was fixed
Thanks for the response. Without going through all the bolts can you give me any indication which bolt it was? Can you send a picture identifying the bolt mentioned? Appreciated.............bill
Um i just kinda looked inside past the body work and noticed a loose bolt sorry i cant be more specific
You should find attached to the Hood a large pin with a spring around it this should line up with the 'slam panel catch' what you have probably done is pushed back the slam panel (this is the metal plate that appears to attach the fenders together) If you have it will need to go to the Paint shop. Get someone to pull and release the release handle repeatedly and check that the catch is being operated properly, my bet is that the catch is O.k and that it is now mis-aligned due to the fender bender.
