Cant communicate with CA smog machine &. ABS Break light on

Asked by Guru2WBXG Feb 23, 2020 at 03:37 PM about the 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

interesting similar problem...CA requires smog test...my char has not failed the
smog test but it failed to communicate with three different machines...Ive been
told it is probably not a big problem. ...but no smog ok...no registration..

I have done everything to this car...and VW only wants to replace the wiring
harness....cost more than value of car. BUT>>>>Passat wagon only has 94k
miles and well cared for...

no smog cert.   no car..

asking....can this part be bought at a junk yard....
Im worried the cost may be so prohibitive and may not solve the problem.

looking for experienced problem solver....

Hey VW...why does this part predictably go at about 100K?

Is your ALDL connector dirty? Remove it from under the dash and spray it with electrical contact cleaner. Inspect the wires going to it. Make sure none are pushed out of the connector body. Then try scanning it yourself or have your local auto parts store scan the computer. If it works after the cleaning and no wires are pushed out of the connector you should be all set. Here's a picture of the ALDL connector. It's under the dash near the steering column. Hope that helps! Jim
