2006 vw 2ltr diesel passat will turn over but wont idle

The car just cut out a few weeks back and wouldnt
start at all, i was told the cambelt and water pump
had gone so i have just changed the belt and
pump. Just started it up but now it turns over but
wont idle!!! Gets to around 1000revs and the
automatically cuts out! I havent put the alternator
belt back on yet though so could that be the issue?
Any ideas????
