1991 Miata AC system

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own a 1991 Miata that I bought used. The previous owner converted the AC
from R12 to 134a. He only replaced the low side inlet with a long adaptor. In
the past I was able to use cans to recharge the system when needed using
that adaptor. This spring, I was not able to charge it, so I took it to my local
shop. They replaced only the low side adaptor and charged the system.
Upon checking their work I found that the put a HIGH SIDE adaptor on the
LOW SIDE port! and again did not touch the actual high side. Since I do not
know how commercial AC charging systems work, I can only assume that
they charged the car through the my low side line with their high pressure
hose. Will this have caused any damage to my car's AC?

No it will not as the system they most likely used relies on heated gas to fill the system. The only drawback is that they would not be able to do an accurate low side/high side pressure readings.

Those old AC compressors are way better than the garbage that they have today, so if the old compressor is still functional just keep using it. In my day I converted a lot of old R12 systems to 134A, the only thing I ever replaced was the dryer and the oils during the flush of the system. Heck back then the place I worked at had a bunch of loaners then he said just pull the old freon out and recharge with 134 and let's see how long they last. An old tempo was the first one to blow but it went over a year before the compressor went and by that time the car was ready for the scrap heap.
