How often should the transmission oil be changed on a 1992 Miata?

the shift stick seems hotter than it ought to be: is that exhaust pipe routing or not enough oil in the transmission!??  thanks for responses, jf

If you have never changed the fluid it is time to do so now. The extra heat coming from the shifter area is probly a torn or ripped rubber boot that sits under the leather shift boot. They do go bad but are easy to replace.
