Muffler Swap from 1990 to 2002, Compatible?
Asked by Mary Apr 20, 2012 at 01:43 PM about the 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata SE
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
So, just throwing this out there to see if anyone can answer my question. I bought a 2002 Miata (1.8L) and there is a bit of rust on the exhaust. A friend of mine has an extra exhaust/muffler from an old 1990 Miata 1.6L so I'm wondering if it would be a compatible swap out. Any input would be great! Thanks :)
*Note: my car is automatic and the '90 is manual. Not sure if that makes a difference. (I'm a new Miata owner and I don't know a lot about cars)

It might be able to and one some of the 90s to the new cars have a pipe inside of a pipe with might would make a diffrence but it should work if it is the same time of car.
If you mean the back box I don't think the Mk 1 & Mk2.5 are compatible. If you look on MX5 parts site they appear quite different. I have a 2001 MX5 1.8 Sport in the same colour of blue & I recently changed the back box & centre box to stainless steel to prevent rust because they are so close to the ground.
I've posted this same question to the Miata forum and was told there that it was probably not going to fit right. But I just wanted to see if I could get a definitive answer rather than maybe or probably... because I have the opportunity to use a free one in good condition and it would be a waste to let it go if it could fit. I appreciate your responses. It is beginning to appear that the swap will be incompatible.
