The eighth digit or letter of the VIN number, located on the dashboard, driver's side, right where the windshield meets the dash, will allow you to call any auto parts store and get the engine type and specifications of your vehicle.

^^ Not totally true. This typically only works with domestics. It may with Mazda's, but Honda, Toyota, and other imports it wouldn't. I would guess that it will for your MX-6 since it shares its roots with the Ford Probe. However, the 2.5l is a V-6, so you know, and if it says DOHC or 24 Valve on the top of the engine (should say 24Valve) Then you know that its a dual overhead cam v-6. Should be all you need to know.
