why is my 1998 Chevy Suburban making a grinding sound when I try to turn it on

The teeth on the starter gear and/or the flywheel could very well be chewed up. There is also a possibility that it is just the starter solenoid not engaging the gear to mesh properly with the flywheel. It would take an inspection under the vehicle to find out what the problem is.
