reading transmission dipstick

I am trying not to over fill my transmission,so I need to be able to read the transmission
dipstick correctly.There are two measurements hot and cold,which one do I use for
correct fluid level.

The dip stick should say check in park or neutral and should say when hot or cold. I do believe you should check it when it is hot because the tranny fluid will expant when it is warm
