Put the car in neutral and turn it off. Put on the e-brake. Place a brick, stone, or a wheel chuck in front of or behind the wheels of the car to prevent it from rolling if the e-brake does not work. Try pulling out on the plastic button you depress to switch gears, it may have broken inside or it may be stuck. The knob is removable put you must pull very hard on it to get it to come off. you may have to turn the shifter knob a quarter turn on the 2005 then pull to remove the knob.

Yeah - had the same problem and this helped. Good advice. There is a two inch pin that came loose and was not connecting inside. Once I removed the button, re- positioned the pin (I basically just had to feel around, it's a little hard because you can't get a view of it) then put the button back, I was able to put it in park and reverse again.
The plastic button on the gear shift broke allowing the pin to fall out of place. You guys nailed my issue. Downside is the dealership only sells the entire shift knob with button as1 piece which is just over $100.00 not including special order shipping. I'm checking junk yards now for a used one.

Can anyone help me ? I have a 2002 s60 and all i did was replace my factory leather shifter knob with a 2002 factory s80 woodgrain knob and now my car wont shift right and it is like its out of alignment and it bangs into reverse and it goes into neutral but wont say its in neutral and when its in drive it is like its only half way in gear or something cause it dont go really
My XC90 won't go back into automatic drive and stay there once I have put it in a manual setting. I feel the plastic trigger on the knob seems like it's real loose. I must have the same pin problem, huh?
My Volvo S60 won't move when I start the engine. What could be the fault.
