Is $5,000 a fair price for a 98 volvo S70 Sedan 5cyl fuel injected automatic? Has 203k miles BUT dealer recently replaced timing belt, brakes, battery, front tires, new valve job, timing belt w tensioner, water pump, radiator, heater hoses, ball joints and outer tie rods. Body is excellent and dealer will warrantee for 4 months. Dealer well respected for over 30 yrs..small family run business and sells nothing but volvos and works on them too. I see the kelly blue book is about 3,500 - 4,000. It's on his lot for 5,900 but will take no less than 5,000. A./C needs charging and ABS lite on..says he will fix.

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

Also meant to mention its fully loaded with leather interior.  Appears he replaced the majore things...hoping I can get many more miles out of this...in this case is book value not a good guide given all that's been replaced and overall condition.  All the work performed by them as well.

Did you shop around on-line yet? $5900 is way too much - I bought my '00 S70 GLT SE for $3500 cash from a little indepedent Volvo mechanic's shop at 148K miles. Now mind you, in the year I've had it, I've put about the same amount I paid for it in repairs/maintenence. Let that be a lesson to you, my friend. The dealer is trying to re-coop his cost for selling another car to make up for that one. I know a dealer in my area who sat on a '00 S40 (I had one like it at the time), for 2 years due to his high price (+$5000). ABS are expensive to fix - check out Repair Pal.com. Then check out Edmunds.com to compare what Kelley Blue Book says. They are awesome cars, but cost a lot to maintain...my wife now hates my "baby". Offer no more than $3000-3500 cash out the door (tax, title, license). Check out the Volvo forums online as well.

Price is actually relative. Mileage and body condition, along with proper maintenance is the real key to finding a good deal. Two cars of the same model and year can be vastly different in value and remaining serviceable life. Some cars that have low mileage and were maintained and garage kept can be like a 2 year old car and others really show their age and will be expensive to maintain. When it's right, you'll know it right away.
