Volvo S80 AC cutting off

Asked by seanandbj Jul 12, 2015 at 08:05 PM about the 2001 Volvo S80 2.9

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Dealer is quoting me $1300 to replace the compressor.  I have seen them for sale from
$200-300.  I have also heard that the fix could be simple recharging AC freon, or adjusting
gap in clutch.  Thoughts? Advice?  Thank you!!

What is your compressor doing clicking on and off or not coming on at all ?

The AC works for a half hour to an hour, then stops working. I can hear and feel the compressor clicking on and off I think normally. The dealer mechanic said the clutch wont engage when the compressor gets too hot, because it is old.

No it's only clicking on and off because its low on freon. Add a can of freon and when the clicking stops and stays on continually the system is full.

You could add freon, but older Volvos have been known to have the A/C compressor cut off while it's running. I saw something recently, but I can't remember where.
