Overheating and hard shift

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Help!! I've recently become the owner of a 2001
volvo v70 turbo. It has 113000 miles and what
I.thought was good condition. I got it from a
private seller. I test drove it about 4 miles, no
highway speed, and went well. Used ac drove nice.
I hit the highway to take it home along with the
a.c.going. About 7 mins into the drive the temp
gauge started climbing. I turned on the heater and
it slowly dropped. After getting it home we added
fluids and parked it. Next day I notice from 1st to
second shifted HARD and slow. At a stop the car
would lurch forward also idle rough. New tstat
finally put it still doing it. Lost a lot of coolant from
somewhere. The second.day after replacing tstat.
Have researched and read transmission and
overheating problems seem to be a trend with this
car. What symptoms do I look.for with bad tranny
and my overheating issue...next step replace water
pump. Thanks in advance guys.

Yep the T5 are known for over heating, the bucking can be from the over heating so lets forget the transmission for the moment. OK you said the fluid was gone with no leaks, correct...It has to go so where and that would be the combustion cylinders. Fill the car and if you see white smoke coming from the tail pipe then you have a blown head gasket. NOT GOOD. but after you changed the thermostat and filled the system did you bleed the system ???? Not sure about you T5 but look for an air bleeder valve on the radiator hose on the driver side going into the engine. Looks like a small red plastic thumb screwthis will help remove the air from the system.

Great thanks so much for the input. We were nervous about getting it to begin with since we have only owned and worked on domestic vehicles. I shall return with news. Good ir bad. And no we didnt bleed it. Planned on doing a whole flush.
