97 Chevy Blazer, missing, reduced power, dies on incline

Asked by Samantha Jun 20, 2016 at 04:26 PM about the 1997 Chevrolet Blazer 2-Door 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

97 Blazer w/ 4.3, occasional backfire (not all the
time), will run but low power on flat land, very little
power on even slight inclines & will completely die
on steep hills...ideas? Trying to start with
cheap/simple fixes before being complicated of
course.

Believe it or not it could be the battery Take it to have it tested for free at any O'Relies etc I had my truck just die driving a few times. My friend said have your battery checked. I thought he was nuts. Well in my case I lucked out and that was the prob. That's all I know

Yes battery is possible, but more to check on if it is not. It is possible the ignition control module is getting weak, or a coil. Check for spark out of the coil and notice what it looks like. It should be white in color, not an orange color. Also the 4.3L Vortec is notorious for the spider injection assembly leaking, as it has be redesigned. Check by doing a fuel bleed down test by hooking up a fuel pressure gauge to the Schrader valve up on the intake, build up fuel pressure by turning the key on, off, then have the key in the off position and watch the gauge. Pressure should not drop more than 5 lbs. in three minutes. Also fuel pressure itself should be 56 to 63 lbs. Fuel pump also could be the culprit.
