you guys are going on! the thing is I put on new front tires 215/50 on ( 98 Z3). The traction control light goes on when I reach 50MPH and the engine losses power. As the speed drops the engine recovers until I hit 50MPH again. If I push the ASC button the light stays on and the system is deactivated. And I can drive normally at higher speeds. This all happened after the tires were changed and I'm not sure if its the tires or a bad sensor. I checked the scan code and no faults.

It may just be a wheel speed sensor problem, the usual culprit on most. the ASC/ABS often goes wrong when wet,is what i have read. Either the wheel speed sensor or the ECU notices how often the ASC is cutting and doesn't believe the values so flags a fault disabling the system.falt code Fault code 5e24 ? it might fix itself if you just keep driving it..but im am not sure...maybe someone else that reads this can add something.

Probably a bad wheel sensor OR DIRTY..... The stability control system, ASC, needs a fully functional ABS system to work. A fault in the ABS will disable both systems. An intermittent ABS fault is usually a bad wheel sensor but a fault in the ABS module is also possible. You have to read the stored error codes to help pinpoint the cause. try and disconnect the battery and reconnect also.any one else out there have any ideas?

also..Since you did not mention an ABS warning light, I will assume that the issue is not related to a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor.

I was questioning the tire size because it happened right after I left the tire center. The ABS warning light never comes on. And the OBD reading only shows an O2 sensor fault PO141, waiting for the part. The 141 fault code was before the tire change. Is it normal for the ASC/ABS system to keep you from accelerating the engine. Basically its a limit control.

You said above, when I reach 50MPH and the engine losses power. As the speed drops the engine recovers until I hit 50MPH again. Now you say that there is the code..check for any new codes first...The oxygen sensor (or O2 sensor) is a device that helps monitor the emissions of your vehicle so as to analyze the air-to-fuel ratio going through the engine In a nutshell, you need to proper amount of oxygen to properly burn the fuel in the engine. Not enough oxygen results in unburn fuel (rich mixture) and too little oxygen (lean mixture) causes more pollutants and can actually damage your engine. When this sensor detects a problem, it sends a signal to the engine to change the amount of fuel being used. If your sensor is malfunctioned, it could be messing up your fuel mixture; and if it’s out altogether, your car’s pretty much just guessing as to what mixture it needs at the moment.also some say your bmw must use the same size tire front and rear...strange to me...your new tires total Circum. inches (mm) 78.45 (1992.71) 80 (2031.98) 1.55 (39.27) is plus >2%..if all else fails put the same size tires on the rear.

I understand what you are saying about the O2 sensor, but when I push in the ASC button it disengages ASC system and car drives without a problem at any speed. Will the scan code show a dirty or faulty wheel sensor?

Maybe Kelly knows the answer to that, or somebody. But I can tell you for sure that running with a wrong air/fuel mix, be it lean or rich is the best way in the world to damage your catalytic convertor. In a hurry.

I dug out the paperwork for my scanner..300 pages of it, and yes, P0500 is BMW faulty wheel speed sensor

Double checked: Symptoms of a P0500 DTC may include: loss of anti-lock brakes the "anti-lock" or "brake" warning lamps on the dash may be lit the speedometer or odometer may not work properly (or at all) your vehicle's RPM limiter may be decreased the shifting of an automatic transmission may become erratic Read more at: http://www.obd-codes.com/p0500 Copyright © OBD-Codes.com

hey ford nut...i ,like you ,i think you...dont think its the front tire size...so where in this post did the po500 come into the picture?the new tire turns Revolutions per mile (km) 807.61 (501.83) 792.01 (492.13) -15.61 (-9.7) -1.9% ... less - 15.67 +/- inches..i thought (good chance)the speed sensor not working ...

Right above my post that starts with "maybe Kelly knows.." 6 up I think ronmor asked "Will the scan code show a dirty or faulty wheel sensor?" So I dug up my scanner book

Dealer said he will switch to BMW recommended tires for the difference in price. So I will see if its the tires. I checked again with the OBD2 reader and come up with no codes

you know if the clean the sensors and change the tires also we we never know with it was....

I'm only having the tires changed. I looked behind the front wheel and I see a cable going into a block and looks like one allen head crew holding it. I assume that's the sensor.

"TIRES" I had the tires changed to the recommended size 225/45 and that did the trick. So the sensors are OK. Hard to believe that small change in tire size caused the problem.

funny after all that...this is the stock tires size for your car.1998 BMW Z3 Roadster/Con 2.8i Front Tire Size: 225/45ZR17 Rear Tire Size: 245/40ZR17 >assuming that you had the same size tires on it to start with = 4X 225/45 R17..i now see the issue... your rear tires are 245/40/17?..that would amound to a 2 size tire change from the front with your 215/50 R17 and 245/40/17.you do have 240/40/17s on the rear?right?

1 people found this helpful.
170

was that last # a typo mistake? I do have the stock tire size 245/40/17 on the rear.

2 people found this helpful.

cars.com specs list rear as 245/40-17 .... and front as 225/45-17 But "Two different styles available" with different sizes. The car came with either 16" or 17" wheels and tire sizes to fit to get the same diameter no matter which wheel. Front identical on both, the option was a wider rear on the 2.8L only. The1.6L didn't have that option for wider rear but total diameter within 0.14". the space between these two lines || Miniscule difference, tread wear accounts for more than that. So ronmor your 245/40-17 are right.

RONMOR HAS THE SAME SIZE RIMS 17' FRONT AND REAR AND HIS STOCK SIZE TIRES ARE NOT THE SAME ! WHEN HE CHANGE THE FRONT TO 215/50S HE THAN HAD A DIFFERENCE OF 2 SIZES BETWEEN THE FRONT AND REAR.215/50 AND THE STOCK 245/40s= 245/40-17 215/50-17 Difference Diameter inches (mm) 24.72 (627.8) 25.46 (646.8) 0.75 (19) 3% Width inches (mm) 9.65 (245) 8.46 (215) -1.18 (-30) -12.2% Circum. inches (mm) 77.65 (1972.29) 80 (2031.98) 2.35 (59.69) 3% Sidewall Height inches (mm) 3.86 (98) 4.23 (107.5) 0.37 (9.5) 9.7% Revolutions per mile (km) 815.98 (507.02) 792.01 (492.13) -23.97 (-14.89) -2.9%
