Transmission fluid flush and refill

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I need to get my transmission fluid flushed and refilled. I have a mechanic friend that will
do this for me for free, but I need to buy the fluid. What kind do I need to get? And how
much will I need to get?

6-73 Capacities and Specifications Automatic Transaxle Pan Removal and Replacement 7.4 quarts (7.0 L) . . . After Complete Overhaul 10.0 quarts (9.5 L) . . . . . When draining/replacing converter, more fluid will be needed Automatic Transaxle DEXRON III Automatic Transmission Fluid
You may want to re-consider a flush. If your fluid is now a nice red/pink, and has no 'burnt' odor a flush can do more harm than good. Changing fluid, all well and good.
PS WAY COOL car. I had a 2004 Regal. Somebody decided they wanted it more than I did
Agree with fordnut, dont flush, just change the fluid and add new filter, flushing can damage seals in the tranny lots of time.
Well maybe I'm mistaken and he wasn't going to flush just change. I'm sure he knows, he is a mechanic at a GM dealership. But it does need it, there is a burnt smell and it is dark in color. The owner's manual says Dexron III, but I can't find that at my local auto parts stores. Is Dexron VI the same kind of thing, just updated? Ya know, since it is a 14 year old car.
And yes, it is a great car! This was my upgrade from a pos 01 grand prix. Best decision I ever made! I got it cheap because it needed some TLC, but once I get that work done, it will still be cheap. And I love it more everyday I drive it!
Auto Zone has it, the item number is 19501, made by Coastal.
Nevermind, found it at Advance. Made by Carquest there. Thanks for all the help guys!
Amazon has it as well http://www.amazon.com/Kendall-527-7424-Dextron-III-Automatic-Transmission/dp/B003WEF7C2/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1434998218&sr=8-4&keywords=dexron+iii
