what do electronics in transmission do?

Asked by newbay415 Jan 27, 2007 at 08:17 PM about the 2007 Acura MDX SH-AWD Technology Package

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am told that the car needs to "learn" my driving style before working properly - that supposedly is the reason for high gas mileage (14 combined) and the transmission shifting down brutally when releasing gas pedal at low speeds and also not releasing (coasting) when foot comes off gas at 60MPH.

Dear newbay415-- I hate to admit it, but cars today are almost as smart as we are. Did you know that there is many times more computer power in your 2007 Acura MDX than were on the spaceships that went to the Moon back in the sixties? The answer then is then yes, your car will learn your driving habits and make adjustments to optimize fuel consumption. Are you a jackrabbit off the line or do you drive like my wife? You didn't say how many miles you have on your new car. I wouldn't be alarmed for the first one or two thousand miles. Good luck from Bovan.

Thanks for your thoughts. I have done 1,300 miles so far. I know about the electronics in cars, and that is fine as long as they do things right. What point is there in the system fighting with me and acting counterintuitively? That's not smart. As it's all in the electronics - should the service department not be able to set the system to my desired settings without me having to go through this painful process?
