My son has a 2007 Dodge Caliber with an automatic CVT transmission and now the gears don't have any torque.

Asked by Maurivero Mar 04, 2015 at 06:46 PM about the 2007 Dodge Caliber SXT FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

All of the sudden the car gears don't engage, we tried on Drive, Low gears and Reverse
and nothing.  We never check the transmission fluid because there is no dip stick. Do
you believe we need to buy a new transmission? Thanks for your help

A CVT transmission has a belt instead of gears. Although it's not common the belt could have ripped and is now broken.

If you pull up a photo of your car you'll see that on the right side--when facing the engine as you're standing in front of it--there is a covered area that looks like a fuse housing. If you take that cover off, thee is the auto trans fluid cover. It isn't a dip stick pre se. Take off the cover by turning counter-clockwise and there's a small 'stick/probe' in there (or something similar) that lets you see the level of your transmission fluid. Hope that helps. Good luck!
