97 Chevy Tahoe power cord under hood

Asked by Stephen Jan 03, 2018 at 12:14 AM about the 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe LT 4-Door 4WD

Question type: General

I thought my 97 Tahoe had a block heater with the
plug resting just inside the front grill. But after
looking closer, the cord runs to a small black box
about 3" tall x 5" wide x 1" thick. The box is
mounted within 1/2 of my battery. It has 2 thin
wires coming put of it. 1 red that goes to positive
battery post and 1 black that is screwed to right
fender. When i plug in a small green & red light
come on.  The labeling is worn so I can't make out
anything written on it. Any ideas?

Float charger to keep battery level maintained, especially in vehicles that have electronics added such as LCD players, etc.

There aren't any added electronics other than a stock radio. I'm guessing there wouldn't be much need for me to plug it in then. Would no help maintain battery power in extreme cold. I live near Chicago and the past week has seen it fair share of negative temps. It was -3 today and -12 with -27 wind chill yesterday..lol.

It would help keep battery charged in extreme cold too, maybe that's why it was added.
