If it is the same size engine, it would be a lot less head aches. You may have to swap some parts from one to the other.
Check the motorcraft web site and look for a remanufactured 4.0 V6 SOHC, if that is what you have. There may be multiple listing depending on the year of manufacture and VIn engine code. If the part number for the engine is the same for both years, then you're good to go. May have to check the PCM programming but make sure you have all the electronic connections in the event you are missing some on the earlier model.
