My 92 Buick roadmaster will crank up fine. After a 6 mile trip the check engine light will come on then minutes after that it would just quit. Mainly at stop signs

Check to see if you gas tank evap system is working. Loosen the gas cap (this will allow air to get in) and see if it still happens. Clogged vent line could cause this issue.

Carbon Monoxide is an order less and tasteless gas. The exhaust is strong because the fuel mixture is wrong and you are not getting a good combustion. That could be part of the reason for your strong exhaust smell. Try and get the codes from the check engine light. That will help find the issue much faster. we are kind of guessing at this point.
