I had this same problem and it was the fact that the battery needed to be replaced. The dealer told me that if the battery voltage drops it locks up the parking brake.

Had exactly this problem and the solution was as azmogal2010 says a new battery and then perfect. Prior to the new battery to release the electronic hand brake I had to disconnect the battery and touch the terminals together; then when turning the engine off holding the handbrake button downwards so it does not turn on.

yes these guys are right but could be a bad connection or terminals too. So if its all hooked up tight and no corrosion then it is definitely the battery

I had the exact same problem on my 2005 s-type, replaced my battery and once the tech reset everything = No problem since then.
