96 cavalier system theft light is on car wont start or turn over but can be crossed started at the starter

the engine will not crank unless you jump the starter

Will it stay running when you jump the starter. If it does then you have an electrical issue somewhere and if you don't know how to read a wiring diagram or diagnose electrical issues then take it to a shop.
