jaguars arent really the most reliable cars in the world. high mileage jags isnt something you see driving around on a normal basis either. it always seems every jag i find has right around 90k miles. how come so many are for sale with that many miles? id pass on it. try to find one with 50k miles. how much are they asking for the one youre looking at?
2500 with a 142 thousand miles on it
I bought an xtype with 47000 miles on it. It cost a fortune to fix. The first few years things slowly started to brake. These were the plastic bits. The air con is terrible, it doesn’t like very hot weather. The rear view mirror, self dimming was a nightmare, central locking stopped working. The mirror, windscreen wash, speaker in the front door, electrical bits, the sat nav, headlights kept blowing, annoying because you had to dislocate your hand to replace, or be brave enough to remove half the engine, 3 header tanks went, the radiator grille later on, that drops out from underneath so you need a hoist. The quality of the plastic bits is sadly poor. So a car that’s high on mileage will start to fall to bits. The engine bay was covered in oil, so leaks here and there. If the differential brakes, you’ll probably throw it away, some have had this problem, I was lucky as the transmission was good on mine. The car is a great chassis, go for the 3 litre petrol, the 2.5 litre is not powerful enough. It corners and handles beautifully, a pleasure to drive, sounds good too. Nice to have all the options, but these do break! And they are very expensive, there should be a large amount of cheap car yard spares around. The older it gets, the more small bits brake. I loved my cat though, bear in mind it’s just not cheap to fix. If it’s been regularly serviced, lots of oil changes and looked after, it will love you back. Good luck.
Looking at a 2000 w 94k for 4,000. I've always wanted a bag. My husband does all our mechanical work. Will it last long enough to make it worth the purchase?
I have a 250,000 mile Jaguar 2002 X type. My neighbor bought it back in 02’ and gave me it as he didn’t need it anymore. I have never had any engine issues, overheating or no starts.
The engine on the jaguar xtype is very reliable solid well built with suprising power. I own a 2002 2.5 liter v6 xtype and it is a beautiful car and very fun to drive. Downfall is a lot of small plastic clips in engine bay over time will fall apart leaving car in limp mode until replaced and those parts are a real pain to find as replacements. Also the xtype are known to have drainage issues underneath in rocker panels and problem was not addressed until 2006 and later. Overall a solid beautifully built car that will turn heads but they will nickel and dime you plan on average dropping anywhere from 300 to 600 a year to maintain. However if you got the money to drive a jag you will have no problem affording the required maintenance. And if you can do your own work or know a guy who can perform the work this maintenance cost can be much less. I love my jag and it now has 123000 miles and is my daily driver. I am looking now to get a newer xtype ! Drive in style my cat lovers !
